2008 Audition InfoAuditions will be held 12/1/07 and 12/15/07 at Manvel High School Front Ensemble (PIT) AuditionsBelow you will find the primary skill sets we would like to see demonstrated at auditions. Any music requirements listed will need to be prepared prior to your audition. It will be your responsibility to memorize the music specific to your instrument prior to your audition.MALLETS 1. Scale Exercises – all major keys various tempos (2 mallets) 2. Transposing/Arpeggio exercises – select key signatures (2 mallets) 3. 16th note check pattern 4. Note Accuracy exercise (2 mallets) 5. Prepared Mallet Etude (2 mallets or *4 mallets, preferred*) (may be solo, show excerpt) 6. Double Vertical – Legato block chords/ 5ths (4 mallets) 7. Independence/ Permutations (4 mallets) 8. Dynamic Control DRUMSET Players will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of various styles (rock, 12/8 Afro-Cuban, Swing, Samba, Bossa Nova, etc.) Sight reading and time-playing will be assessed as well. AUXILIARY PERCUSSION Prospective percussionists will be required to perform a prepared audition etude as well as demonstrate BASIC rudimental snare drum skills, auxiliary voices, cymbal technique (rolls, chokes, crashes). If you have special skills as a hand drummer or on other percussion instruments you are encouraged to demonstrate those skills. SYNTH/ PIANO Synthesizer players should prepare a short piece from the classical or contemporary piano repertoire that demonstrates technical facility. Prospective players will also be required to play a prepared audition etude as well as sight-read. Rhythmic facility will also be assessed. ELECTRIC BASS Prospective bass players will be required to demonstrate ‘comping’ bass playing in a variety of styles (swing, funk, latin, etc.) and will be auditioned both solo and with a drummer. You will also have the opportunity to demonstrate solo ability. Sight-reading and time playing will also be assessed. Battery Audtions (Competition Line)Below you will find the primary skill sets we would like to see demonstrated at auditions. Any music listed will need to be prepared prior to your audition. It will be your responsibility to memorize the music specific to your instrument prior to your audition.VISUAL AUDITION For the battery members, part of your audition will include a thorough marching and movement evaluation, so please plan accordingly when choosing your dress. We recommend athletic shoes, shorts or sweatpants, and a comfortable shirt. No jeans or cargo pants. You will not be required to learn a new technique prior to your audition. Potential members will be evaluated based on their timing, attention to detail, and ability to listen and respond to instructions from the visual staff. SNARES/TENORS All listed below will need to be played at slow, med, fast tempos. 8's On Tap Double Entendre (different heights) Triple Threat Jasperus Yo diddley Prepared Etude – with characteristic techniques (contemporary rudiments). Prepared Rudiments - Random pick by Director (Flam 5's, Cheeses, Grandmas, Inverts) Tenors: Split tenor parts must be learned. BASS DRUMS (learn the rhythms to be played unison, and the split part of the drum you with to audition for). 8's On Tap- unison and split Jasperus- unison and split Double beat / Triple beat – slow med fast (different heights) Triple Threat- unison and split Timing Etude- will be an exercise learned on the audition day. CYMBAL LINE All information will be discussed and distributed at auditions.
